Plot summary
In AD 90, Emperor Domitian claims divinity as ruler of heaven and earth, and Christians who reject him are persecuted across the province of Asia. Soldiers attack the village where the aged apostle John lives, and he escapes with divine orders to record his visions and send them to the Christian communities. John is imprisoned on Patmos, a Roman mining colony run by the corrupt official Corvus. In Smyrna, the elder Gaius fears that his congregation is dying, until the young Irene arrives, certain that John is alive. With her brother Ionicus, a trader who visits Patmos, she seeks a way into the camp. Valerius, the man Irene loves, serves the Roman general Rufus, who sends him to Patmos in disguise to learn whether John lives.
