Plot summary
A schoolteacher in St. Petersburg, Missouri, warns her pupils away from Huckleberry Finn, and his friends at the fishing hole pass on the news that poor attendance will keep him from being promoted. The Widow Douglas, his guardian, gives him a new knife for the promotion he will not get. Jim, the Widow's slave, longs to be with his wife, now far off in Illinois. Huck smokes in private until the Widow's stern sister, Miss Watson, summons him for Bible reading; the pipe hidden in his pocket sets his jacket on fire. The Widow hears him out with sympathy, but his father waits in his bedroom, intending to force her to pay eight hundred dollars to keep custody of the boy. Huck tries to leave town, his father seizes him and locks him in a rundown cabin.
