Plot summary
Harvey Cheyne is the son of Frank Burton Cheyne, a wealthy American businessman. His boarding school classmates keep their distance, and bad behavior gets him sent home. His father hopes a business trip to Europe will bring them closer, so the two cross the Atlantic by steamship. Days out, Harvey goes into the sea on the Grand Banks of Newfoundland. Manuel Fidello, a Portuguese fisherman on the Gloucester schooner We're Here, pulls him out. Captain Disko Troop doubts the boy's stories of a rich father and refuses to sail him back to New York; the season's fishing still lies ahead. Troop offers Harvey work aboard until the ship reaches port. Harvey resists, then accepts with Manuel's prodding, and Dan Troop, the captain's son, becomes his friend.
