Plot summary
Mattie is a psychology student whose boyfriend, the hacker Josh, breaks into the computer of Douglas Ziegler, a man developing a powerful wireless signal, and lets a mysterious force loose. The force takes people's will to live, and a suicide epidemic spreads. Mattie and her friends get online messages that seem to come from Josh's machine, which they blame on a virus. The computer is now Dex's, and it holds strange videos. A parcel from Josh contains rolls of red tape and a note saying the tape keeps them out.

- Wes Craven wrote the remake and was ten days from shooting when Harvey and Bob Weinstein shut the production down, a move meant to push him into directing Cursed instead after he had turned that job down.
- Kirsten Dunst, not Kristen Bell, was the name attached to the lead when Craven finished his draft in June 2002 with co-writer Vince Gilligan.
