Plot summary
In Beacontown, Nebraska, seventeen-year-old Scott Howard has little going for him beyond a place on the Beavers, the high school basketball team that keeps losing. He pines for Pamela Wells, who dates Mick, a player on the rival Dragons who bullies him on the court, and he does not see that his childhood friend Boof cares for him. After hair begins to sprout on his hands and chest, Scott tries to quit the team and his coach talks him out of it. At a party with his friends Stiles and Lewis, a closet game leaves him alone with Boof; when they kiss, he scratches her back. At home he turns into a werewolf, and his father Harold, also a werewolf, calls it a family curse he had hoped his son would escape.

- The film came together because Michael J. Fox's Family Ties co-star Meredith Baxter-Birney became pregnant, which delayed the sitcom's filming and gave Fox time to make Teen Wolf and return to the show.
- Teen Wolf was one of Jeph Loeb's first scripts, written because the studio wanted a cheap, quick comedy after the success of Valley Girl.
