Janet Margolin

Biography

Janet Margolin was an American actress who worked in theater, film and television and began with commercials and the soap opera The Edge of Night. Born in New York City, she studied at the High School of Performing Arts, and in 1961, while doing prop work for the New York Shakespeare Festival, she won the Broadway role of Anna in Daughter of Silence, earning a Tony Award nomination. Frank Perry then cast her as the female lead in her first movie, David and Lisa (1962), and she appeared opposite Marlon Brando in Morituri (1965) and Steve McQueen in Nevada Smith (1966). She played the love interest of Woody Allen's characters in Take the Money and Run (1969) and Annie Hall (1977), and co-starred with Roy Scheider in Jonathan Demme's thriller Last Embrace (1979). Her final film was Ghostbusters II (1989), followed by television work in Murder, She Wrote and Columbo.

Margolin was 18 in 1961 and worked at the New York Shakespeare Festival as a prop assistant. She beat 200 other applicants to win the Broadway part of Anna in Morris West's Daughter of Silence.
A role that slipped away
While still at the High School of Performing Arts, Margolin took a screen test for Five Finger Exercise. She was pressed to sign a contract but turned it down and went back to New York.
