Marcel Hillaire

Marcel Hillaire was a German-born character actor with a long career on stage, in films, and on television. Born in Cologne, he moved to the United States in 1948 and worked in New York restaurants while seeking acting jobs, then took the name Marcel Hillaire and a French persona. He played European characters in Manhattan theater and early television, with appearances on Goodyear Playhouse, Lux Video Theatre, and The Goldbergs. His first film role was in Billy Wilder's Sabrina (1954), as the French chef who trains Audrey Hepburn's character. On Broadway he appeared in The Heavenly Twins and in the original cast of Cole Porter's Silk Stockings. After moving to Los Angeles, he continued playing Frenchmen on television and toured a one-man show, The Smile of France. He later appeared in The Twilight Zone, Lost in Space, Get Smart, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., and was featured as a director in Woody Allen's Take the Money and Run (1969).
