Plot summary
Hogan 'Hoagie' Malloy gathers Bob Callahan, Randy 'Chilli' Cilliano and Kevin Sable for one more round of the game they have played every May since 1983, telling them that Jerry Pierce, never once tagged, intends to retire after this year because he is getting married. Rebecca Crosby, a Wall Street Journal reporter writing a piece on Bob, joins the group and decides to write about the friends instead, and Hoagie's wife Anna comes along. In Spokane, Washington, they find Jerry and make an attempt, but he overwhelms them. Jerry brings them to meet his fiancée, Susan. Because the others were not invited to the wedding, they agree to keep the game away from wedding events in exchange for invitations.

- In July 2017 Jeremy Renner fractured his right elbow and left wrist after falling 20 ft performing a stunt; he ended up performing the stunt a second time before going to the hospital, and the production team used CGI to remove his casts in post-production.
- The film is based on a real-life group of friends from Spokane, Washington, who played a month-long game of tag every February over 28 years, governed by a contract written by Patrick J. Schultheis; the "Tag Brothers" started the game at Gonzaga Preparatory School in the 1980s and were elected to its Hall of Fame.
