Plot summary
Guy Crouchback comes home to England from Italy when the Second World War begins, the heir to a Roman Catholic family in decline, and signs up with the Royal Corps of Halberdiers. He hopes to fight on the side of good against evil. The corps he joins holds eccentrics, and elsewhere in the army he meets men he finds to be cowards, incompetents and a few who are worse; promotions and fame go to them rather than to him. Separated from his wife Virginia, he tries to win her back and fails. Real combat never comes his way, and his war turns into a run of postings.
