Plot summary
Steve Brooks is a womanizing advertising man. Three ex-lovers, Margo, Liz and Felicia, lure him to a surprise party and try to drown him in a hot tub; when he lunges at them, Margo shoots him. He wakes in purgatory, where God grants him a single chance to redeem himself: he will live again in a different body and must find a woman who loves him truly, or his soul belongs to the Devil. The Devil talks God into making it a challenge, and Steve comes back as a beautiful woman, Amanda. Amanda persuades Margo that she is Steve and asks to be taught how to be a woman. Calling herself Steve's half-sister, she moves into his old life.

- Mystery Science Theater 3000 referenced Switch repeatedly: its TV spots billed it as "Ellen Barkin. Switch. Jimmy Smits," without an "also starring" for Jimmy Smits, so the show's writers made saying his name a running gag whenever the word "switch" was spoken.
- Henry Mancini was to compose and arrange the score, sharing composer credit with Don Grady, but his music was replaced by a Paul Young/Clannad version of Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides, Now"; both albums were released on CD in 1991, leaving the film with two soundtracks.
