Plot summary
Melissa Morgan, fifteen, is new to a small Texas town where her father, John, is an archaeologist directing a dig for Native American artifacts and her mother, Joanne, grew up. Lost near a bar one evening, she is warned to leave by Jason Longshadow, who has been hired to help on the excavation, and then accepts a ride home from a local boy. When that boy is found dead, Sheriff Dan Burke, whose son Hank was also out that night, investigates, and Melissa, the last person believed to have seen the victim, is questioned by Dan after he obtains her parents' permission. More killings follow, and suspicion falls on the new girl.
