Plot summary
At a club, Ray watches Aura dance with other men and pulls her off the dance floor. The two argue, and she leaves alone to drive home. In the parking lot someone chokes her with a hose. The newspapers report a fourth killing in Los Angeles by the Spread-Eagle Killer. Police bring Ray in for questioning, and Sergeant Thomas Mackey treats him roughly. Dr. Sally Powers, who works in criminal psychopathology, is asked to help the department understand how the killer thinks. Mackey may keep working the case, and avoid a ten-day suspension, only if he agrees to supervise her.
