Plot summary
With their father away, the Walker children, John, Susan, Tatty and Roger, travel with their mother and baby sister to the Lake District for the summer. At the Jackson farm on Lake Windermere they are lent a sailing boat, Swallow, and allowed to camp on a distant island. John is captain, Susan master's mate, Tatty keeper of the log and Roger lookout. Their food is lost overboard on the way. On the island they find a skull and crossbones warning left by the Amazons, Nancy and Peggy Blackett, who sail their own boat and want the island for themselves. The two crews become rival pirates. Meanwhile a man on a houseboat complains to Mrs Walker about a window broken by a stone, and two strangers keep watch on his boat.
