Plot summary
Kara Zor-El is born on Argo City, a surviving fragment of Krypton, and sent to Earth as a child with her dog Krypto. Now living as Supergirl, she spends her 23rd birthday traveling between planets with Krypto, while her cousin Superman worries she will not settle down. On the planet Holzherr, she meets Ruthye Marye Knoll, the last of her family after the bandit Krem of the Yellow Hills murdered them. Ruthye begs Kara to help her take revenge, but Kara refuses. Then Krem and his Brigands seize Kara's ship; when Krypto tries to stop them, Krem shoots him with a poisoned dart. Learning Krypto has three days to live, Kara sets out after Krem, who carries the antidote, and reluctantly takes Ruthye along.

- Warner Bros. test-screened two versions of the film: Craig Gillespie's cut, which ran 11 minutes longer and included more of the villain Krem, scored strongly on pacing and the villain, but the studio released its own cut after it scored slightly higher.
- Director James Gunn personally picked the needle-drop "The Middle" for the film's final major action sequence out of roughly 45 songs under consideration; his original choice, a cover of Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun", was scrapped.
- The cape on Milly Alcock's Supergirl costume was made from 16 meters of the same fabric used for the cape of Christopher Reeve's Superman costume.
