Plot summary
Vincent Furnier grows up in Detroit as the son of a pastor, and severe asthma takes the family to Phoenix. In a high school art class he meets Dennis Dunaway; both are drawn to surrealism and to the Beatles, and they put on a talent-show spoof with guitarist Glen Buxton. The group becomes the Earwigs, then the Spiders, and plays as house band at the VIP Club while they are still in school. In Los Angeles the GTOs style them and introduce them to Frank Zappa, and a ouija board session gives them the name Alice Cooper. Manager Shep Gordon signs them; their first record, Pretties for You, is cut in a day and reviewed badly, and a Los Angeles show for six thousand hippies clears the room.

- Alice Cooper planned to end a show by opening feather pillows and a CO2 cartridge to look like snow, but Vincent Furnier found a chicken backstage, threw it off the stage, and the audience tore it apart and threw it back.
- The band's name Alice Cooper came from a ouija board session while they were using drugs, after they had already been the Earwigs, the Spiders, and briefly Nazz, which they abandoned when they learned Todd Rundgren had a band called Nazz.
- The GTOs, a girl band, helped create Alice Cooper's early onstage look by styling the band members with their own clothing, which was described as making them look like full size Barbie dolls.
