Iggy Pop
Biography
Iggy Pop is an American singer, songwriter and actor who fronted the proto-punk band the Stooges. Born James Newell Osterberg Jr. in Muskegon, Michigan, he played drums in high school bands in Ann Arbor before forming the Psychedelic Stooges. The group's albums, including The Stooges (1969) and Raw Power (1973), sold poorly at first but later proved highly influential. Pop's solo work with Bowie, The Idiot and Lust for Life (1977), yielded songs such as The Passenger and Lust for Life. In 1990 he scored his only Top 40 US hit, Candy, a duet with Kate Pierson. Named one of NPR's 50 Great Voices, he entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the Stooges in 2010 and was given a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2020. He has also acted on television and appears in the 2016 Stooges documentary Gimme Danger.

A first
Iggy Pop was one of the first performers to stage-dive and popularized the activity, a move that became a signature of his confrontational live shows.
A change of course
Pop left the University of Michigan and went to Chicago to study blues further. There he played drums in blues clubs, with Sam Lay sharing connections that helped him.
Getting ready for a role
Pop's stage persona started to form when he watched the Doors perform at the University of Michigan in 1967. Singer Jim Morrison's stage antics and antagonism left him amazed.
A first
In 1990, Iggy Pop recorded "Candy", a duet with Kate Pierson, the singer from the B-52s. It became his only Top 40 U.S. hit.
Behind the camera
For the 1984 movie Repo Man, Pop wrote and performed the title track. Steve Jones, formerly of the Sex Pistols, played guitar, while Blondie's Nigel Harrison and Clem Burke handled bass and drums.
Beyond film
For a POINT Music/Philips Classics recording of John Moran's multimedia opera The Manson Family, Iggy Pop took the singing part of "The Prosecutor" in 1990.
