Plot summary
In 1958, Matthew Wakefield is left to raise three boys after his wife's suicide. Unemployed, he leaves his two older sons with Cora, his sister, and her husband Jonas, who will not take in the youngest, John, because of the boy's cognitive disabilities, so Matthew keeps John with him as he looks for work. A construction job in a small town brings him the company of two laborers, The Swede and Diploma, and an introduction to Rose Montgomery, the wife of a gas-station owner. In the present, police officer Tom Adkins Sr., whose own son disappeared eight years earlier, works the case of the child in the suitcase, remains that forensics date to that same era.
