Plot summary
Jack, a college freshman, returns to his family's home in the New York suburbs after hearing that Stella, his dog since childhood, is close to death. On the train he spots a girl he met at a party and had been infatuated with. At home he reunites with his younger brother Oliver and their mother Sally, and meets Sally's boyfriend Ron, who dislikes the way the brothers talk to their mother. Oliver then brings over his girlfriend Violet, a ballet dancer, and Jack recognizes her as the girl he saw on the subway. Violet and the brothers head to a party given by a fellow dancer, Cassandra.
