Plot summary
Boston police Sergeant Spenser pleads guilty to assaulting Captain John Boylan, a man he suspected was involved in the killing of his family friend Gloria Weisnewski, who had campaigned against gentrification. While in prison he trains for truck driving work in Arizona, and he is warned to stay out of Boston. After release he lives with Henry Cimoli, whose roommate is Hawk. Captain Boylan is then murdered, and Detective Driscoll and his partner Macklin bring Spenser in for questioning. Driscoll, once Spenser's partner, accepts his alibi and tells him to leave the city. Detective Terrence Graham is reported to have killed himself and is named as Boylan's killer, and Spenser starts looking into the two deaths, with Hawk at his side.

- The home of Spenser's friend Henry Cimoli was shot on the Jones Hill street in Boston where Mark Wahlberg lived in his teens, and Raynham Park, another former greyhound racing track, doubled as the Wonderland Greyhound Park, which was demolished in 2017.
