Plot summary
In 1944 Romania, the Wehrmacht is losing ground to the Red Army, and Major Kurt Fleischer and his squad are in the middle of the fighting. Fleischer is called away for a dangerous assignment: he is to take Professor Anna Kappel of the Ahnenerbe, together with the SS Sturmbannführer Heinrich Metzger, into woodland that people believe is haunted, and locate an ancient relic there. Fleischer has doubts, since Kappel is his former lover and Metzger is his enemy, but he obeys. Inside the trees the squad comes upon a Red Army unit running in panic from an unseen enemy. Metzger catches glimpses of figures in white robes watching them, and at night voices in an unknown language carry through the forest.
