Plot summary
With the European Union in a financial crisis and NATO weakened, a militant North Korea and an ultranationalist Russia have made common cause, and American troops serving abroad leave the mainland exposed. Marine Jed Eckert comes home on leave to Spokane, Washington, reuniting with his father, police Sergeant Tom Eckert, his brother Matt, and his childhood friend Toni Walsh, whose cousin Erica Martin is Matt's girlfriend. After a blackout, North Korean paratroopers drop into the city. Tom tells his sons to escape to the family cabin in the woods while he stays to help the townspeople. Matt's friends Robert Kitner, Daryl Jenkins and Danny Jackson, the Goodyear siblings Julie and Greg, and a stranger named Pete join them, and the group faces a choice between surrender and resistance.
