Plot summary
John Carteret is standing at the grave of Moonyeen, the woman he was to marry, who was shot on their wedding day by a jealous rival, Jeremy Wayne. Since then he has lived as a recluse, and her spirit visits him in his garden, unseen by him. His friend Dr. Owen brings him Moonyeen's orphaned niece, Kathleen, hoping he will take the child in, and he raises her as his own. In 1915, Kathleen and her childhood friend Willie take shelter from a thunderstorm in the empty Wayne mansion, where she meets Kenneth Wayne, and the two are drawn to each other. The news leaves John in a fury: Kenneth's father is the man who killed Moonyeen.

- Irving Thalberg brought in Donald Ogden Stewart to rewrite dialogue for Smilin' Through after about half the film had been shot; Stewart said he got the job for his reputation as a humorist and called it his first real introduction to Hollywood.
