Mary Carlisle
Biography
Mary Carlisle was an American actress, singer and dancer who became a leading lady in 1930s musical comedies, often cast as a wholesome ingenue. Born in Boston and raised partly in Los Angeles, she got her start through her uncle, a film editor and producer, and appeared, uncredited, in the 1923 silent film Long Live the King. Studio executive Carl Laemmle Jr. spotted her at 14, and she signed with MGM in 1930, taking small parts in Madam Satan (1930) before being named one of the WAMPAS Baby Stars in 1932. Her break came when Paramount lent her to star in College Humor (1933) with Bing Crosby, a performance critics praised, and she went on to appear in Dance, Girl, Dance (1940) and to co-star in Dead Men Walk (1943), after which she retired. In 1960 she received a Hollywood Walk of Fame star.
