Plot summary
On April 3, 2005, the robot Andrew joins the Martin household, where he handles housekeeping and maintenance and introduces himself with the Three Laws of Robotics. Grace, the older daughter, wants nothing to do with him, but her younger sister Amanda takes to him, and Andrew finds that he feels emotions and seeks out Amanda's company. He breaks one of her glass figurines and replaces it with a wooden one he carves himself, which startles Amanda's father, Richard. Richard brings Andrew to NorthAm Robotics to ask whether his inventiveness was part of his design. The company's chief executive, Dennis Mansky, calls it a problem and offers to scrap him. Richard takes Andrew home instead and urges him to keep creating. Andrew becomes a clockmaker, and Richard manages the money he earns, because the law gives robots no rights.

A sequel with the working title Tricentennial Man was planned, expected to follow the political changes after the death of Andrew the robot and to feature a cameo by Robin Williams in his robotic form in the after life, but it was canceled due to the original's mixed reception and poor box office.- Walt Disney Studios was concerned about the cost of the film, estimated to be over $100 million, and pulled the plug even though pre-production was underway and sets were already being built; studio chairman Joe Roth then agreed with Sony's John Calley to co-finance it.
- Various scenes were shot inside San Francisco City Hall, with the city charging Disney from $5,000 to $20,000 per day; the heat from two 10,000-watt spotlights triggered the fire sprinkler system and flooded the building, whose renovations had only recently been completed after an earlier flood.
- Before Williams was cast, Tim Allen was considered for the role of Andrew Martin, but Allen turned it down due to his commitment on Galaxy Quest.
- Robin Williams confirmed in a Las Vegas Sun interview that his character was not played by a body double and that he had actually worn the robot costume himself.
- Robin Williams was nominated for a Razzie Award for Worst Actor for Bicentennial Man, an award he lost to Adam Sandler in Big Daddy.
