- Director Tarlov pitched the lead role to Holly Hunter, but the studio did not want her. Sarah Jessica Parker was then wanted and judged too old, so the character was rewritten as a 20-year-old woman for Sarah Michelle Gellar, whose Buffy the Vampire Slayer success the studio wanted to cash in on.
- The original working title for the film was "Vanilla Fog", a detail that Sarah Michelle Gellar mentioned while appearing on The Tonight Show.
- The screenplay was written by Judith Roberts, the wife of the film's director, Tarlov, and was based on a story that Roberts and Tarlov developed together.
- The layout of the restaurant at the end of the movie closely resembles the restaurant and night club, the "Silver Sandal", from the 1936 musical Swing Time.
