Plot summary
Leon Labuschagne is a young white prison guard in South Africa in the closing years of apartheid. He is charged over a shooting that killed seven unarmed black sportsmen, and no motive for it is apparent. John Weber, a British-born defense attorney who opposes the death penalty, is assigned to the case. He sets out to show that the executions Leon witnessed at work left the guard psychologically traumatized, and that this shaped what he did. Kathleen Marais prosecutes for the state. Justice J. P. van Zyl is the chief judge.
