Plot summary
In 1813, with Napoleon's army weakened by the failed invasion of Russia, Lord Wellington prepares to push the French out of Spain. Sharpe mourns his wife Teresa. His old enemy, the French Major Ducos, proposes to Napoleon a plan to break the alliance between Spain and England and to take revenge on Sharpe. Ducos has his spy la Marquesa send her husband, a Spanish colonel, a letter saying Sharpe attacked her. The colonel demands a duel, and Sharpe obliges, but Wellington's men stop the fighting before Sharpe can kill him.
