Plot summary
On patrol on the Spanish-French border, Richard Sharpe and his men drive off the French soldiers who have killed the people of a Spanish village and rescue a survivor, Miranda. Brigadier General Loup, their commander, tries to bargain for the two French prisoners. Wellington receives reinforcements from the King of Spain: the Real Compania Irlandesa, a bodyguard of Irish descent under the inexperienced Lord Kiely, trained only for ceremonies. Invented reports in American newspapers accuse the British army of atrocities in Ireland, and Wellington gives Sharpe the task of training the company under Colonel Runciman.
