Plot summary
Lila, an ex-girlfriend from Moses Wine's college days, works in the election campaign of Miles Hawthorne, who is running for governor of California. She takes Moses, a former student radical now working as a private investigator, to meet Sam Sebastian, the campaign coordinator. Sebastian is worried about a fake flyer that supposedly shows Howard Eppis, a former Berkeley radical, standing with Hawthorne and endorsing him. Because Moses was a contemporary of Eppis years before, Sebastian hires him to determine whether Eppis is behind the flyer. Eppis has been in hiding for years.
