Little Richard
Biography
Little Richard was a singer, pianist and songwriter from the United States. Born in Macon, Georgia, he began performing professionally after Sister Rosetta Tharpe asked him to open one of her shows in 1947. He recorded for RCA Victor and Peacock Records before joining Specialty Records in 1955. That year Tutti Frutti became an instant hit, reaching number two on Billboard's Rhythm and Blues Best-Sellers chart and crossing into pop charts in the United States and Britain. Long Tall Sally topped the R&B chart in 1956, and other singles from the period included Rip It Up, Ready Teddy and Lucille. When he left Specialty in 1959, he had scored nine top-40 pop singles plus seventeen top-40 R&B singles. In 1962 he toured Europe, where the Beatles opened some of his shows. In 1986 he was part of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's first group of inductees.
