Plot summary
In 2003, after the American-led invasion of Iraq, Sérgio Vieira de Mello becomes the United Nations Special Representative in Baghdad. He intends to help Iraqis achieve independence and to negotiate the withdrawal of American troops. That aim puts him in conflict with Paul Bremer, the American administrator of the Coalition Provisional Authority, and de Mello insists that the UN base camp have no American guards, so that the mission is not tied to the occupation. He is unhappily married, and has decided to leave his wife for Carolina Larriera, a UN economic consultant and his girlfriend, who advises him against the posting. Gil Loescher, his deputy, is with him in Iraq.
