Plot summary
Marian Ives and Doris are teachers who travel to the Yorkshire moors a year after their friend Evelyn went missing there. On the moors they meet a man they believe was involved in Evelyn's disappearance. A storm breaks, and the women shelter in the isolated cottage of Stephen Deremid, a one-time pianist whose nerves were shattered in the Spanish Civil War. Floodwater cuts the cottage off from the road. Doris, who is man-hungry, leaves as soon as the water subsides. Marian, restrained, stays on among the misty bogs, her doubts about Evelyn's fate at odds with her growing love for Stephen.

- The Night Has Eyes first got an A rating from the British censor and was booked on Britain's biggest cinema circuit, but the rating was then changed to H ("Horrific"), barring anyone under 16. Because the large circuits only showed A films, independent cinemas got the James Mason thriller instead.
- Artificial fog covers almost every exterior in the film, and cinematographer Gunther Krampf spent long periods getting that fog to just the right density.
