Plot summary

In New York City, Ruth Rogen sits on death row for the murders of three former lovers. Her fourth lover, the charlatan psychic Paul Bavian, turned her in to the police. Dr. Carl Houston argues that an executed killer's spirit can go on committing crimes, and he wins permission to test the body of Rogen after her electrocution. Meanwhile, the heiress Roma Courtney, whose twin brother John has died, is approached by Bavian, who says John has a message for her. Her fiancé, Grant Wilson, believes the séance Bavian arranges is a scam. At the séance, Bavian says John was murdered by Hammond, the manager of the Courtney estate.

Carole Lombard's resentment of Supernatural led to repeated arguments on set with director Halperin, and during filming the 1933 Long Beach earthquake sent the cast and crew running from the studio set shrieking in fright.
Madge Bellamy wrote in her autobiography that the Halperin brothers tried to get her from Paramount for the lead in Supernatural, but the studio insisted on signing Fox's Carole Lombard instead.
Harvey Thew and Garnett Weston were reported to have attended real séances and interviewed spiritualists while gathering research to write Supernatural.
Because of its sexual content, Supernatural was rarely shown on television, as was also the case for Island of Lost Souls and Murders in the Zoo.
Before Carole Lombard played the lead in Supernatural, Pola Negri was considered for the part with Ricardo Cortez as a male lead, but neither was cast because of scheduling issues.
