Plot summary
Ruth Earlton is told that her father has died, and she returns to his house on a stormy night with her fiancé, Dr. Ted Clayton, to learn what will be done with the Earlton estate. Her uncle Robert, an invalid, is there, along with Mrs. Krug, who keeps the house, and her son Hanns. In the basement Ruth comes upon a large ape that her father kept for his experiments. The household gathers to hear how the estate is to be divided. The estate is left to Ruth; should she die, it passes to her uncle Robert. Mrs. Krug and Hanns are left small monthly sums, which upsets them.
