Dorothy Tutin

Biography

Dorothy Tutin was an English stage, film and television actress who made her first stage appearance in 1949 as Princess Margaret in The Thistle and the Rose. Born in London, she worked with the Bristol Old Vic, the Old Vic and the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre Company, playing Juliet, Viola and Ophelia. Her stage work brought her two Olivier Awards for Best Actress in a Revival and two Best Actress prizes from the Evening Standard, plus a Tony nomination for Portrait of a Queen. Among her screen credits were The Importance of Being Earnest (1952), which earned her a BAFTA nomination, A Tale of Two Cities (1958), Cromwell (1970), The Shooting Party (1985), Savage Messiah (1972) and Murder with Mirrors (1985). She also played Anne Boleyn in The Six Wives of Henry VIII and Goneril in King Lear on television. She was appointed CBE in 1967 and made a Dame in 2000, and died in 2001.
