Imogen Claire
Biography
Imogen Claire was a British performer whose career took in dancing, choreography, acting, and dance teaching. She trained at the Royal Ballet School and London Dance Theatre. She began her career as a dancer and took leading roles in the 1960s, including Terpsichore in the first English staging of Stravinsky's Apollo in 1963. In 1970 she appeared on stage as Lucretia Borgia in The Council of Love. Ken Russell cast her in small parts in several of his films, starting with The Music Lovers, The Devils, and The Boy Friend in 1971, and she later appeared in his The Lair of the White Worm (1988). Her other films included Savage Messiah (1972), Lisztomania (1975), The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975), Caravaggio (1986), and Salome's Last Dance (1988). She worked in theater with Philip Prowse and taught at the Drama Centre London. Elected to Equity's council in 1994, she helped create dance initiatives before her final film, Billy Elliot (2000).

A first
In 1963, billed as Imogen Crowe, Claire danced the role of Terpsichore in the first English staging of Stravinsky's ballet Apollo, choreographed by Balanchine, with Maximo Barra as Apollo.
Big break
Ken Russell recruited Claire for minor parts in his films after seeing her play Lucretia Borgia on stage in The Council of Love in 1970, opposite Warren Mitchell as Satan.
Early training
Claire studied at the Royal Ballet School and the London Dance Theatre. In autumn 1961, the Dancing Times listed her as a notable leaver from the Royal Ballet School who earned a commendation on her Advanced Royal Academy of Dance exams.
