Regina Taylor
Biography
Regina Taylor is an American actress and playwright whose earliest screen work came while she was a student at Southern Methodist University, in two television films, Nurse (1980) and, a year later, Crisis at Central High. She drew wide attention as Mrs. Carter in Lean on Me (1989), and viewers of the early 1990s series I'll Fly Away knew her as Lilly Harper, a part that won her a Golden Globe and an NAACP Image Award. Her films include Clockers (1995), Losing Isaiah (1995), Courage Under Fire (1996), A Family Thing (1996) and The Negotiator (1998), and she spent four seasons on the CBS drama The Unit. On Broadway her roles included Juliet in Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth and As You Like It. Crowns, which she wrote and directed, won four Helen Hayes Awards.

Taylor appeared as Vanessa Anders in the 2016 original pilot of Time After Time, but Nicole Ari Parker took over the role before the series aired, which had a new pilot with Parker.

For Oo-Bla-Dee, a play about female jazz musicians in the 1940s, Taylor received a best new play award in 2000 from the American Critics' Association.

In 2006, Taylor's musical Crowns was performed more than any other musical nationwide. It earned four Helen Hayes Awards for Washington, D.C. productions, among them Taylor's Best Direction win and Best Regional Musical.

Taylor adapted Anton Chekhov's The Seagull as Drowning Crow, which she wrote and directed. The Manhattan Theatre Club staged it on Broadway in February 2004 at the Biltmore Theatre, with Marion McClinton directing.
