Plot summary
Dax Ardwick closes down the Hope Springs Youth Center just days before Christmas, then is fired in a corporate power play by his boss Lane. Having lived beyond his means, he loses his girlfriend Tanya, his company car and soon his house. At the North Pole, Santa needs a new second-in-command after the longtime Ho-Ho-Ho steps down, and Eleanor, the outgoing holder's daughter, is sure the post should be hers. Wanting a human influence at the North Pole, Santa asks Billie, an elf shunned by her fellows for her round ears, to judge whether Dax suits the job. Billie puts him through demanding, embarrassing trials without revealing who the employer is, and the two grow closer as the tests go on.
