Big break
In January 2014, McGowan joined the Starz adventure series Black Sails, playing Charles Vane, a fictional take on the real 18th-century English pirate. Because the part needed an English actor, the American McGowan put on an accent, and casting directors later learned he was faking but were impressed and chose him.
