Plot summary
Cicero, a former slave, comes to Yellowstone City, Montana, a boomtown that has gone bust. He wants a place to live. On the day he arrives, a prospector in the town finds gold and is killed. Sheriff Jim Ambrose believes the killer is a newcomer. He assumes it is Cicero, because Cicero is the only man who does not know what the sheriff will do to him.
