Plot summary
For Robbie Wheeling, college brings a circle of friends: Kate Finch, Daniel and Jay-Jay Brockway, all of them devoted to a fantasy role-playing game. Each arrives with trouble at home. Kate's father has left and her relationships keep failing, Daniel's parents refuse his ambition to design video games, Jay-Jay's mother keeps redecorating his room, and Robbie's parents fight constantly while the disappearance of his brother, Hall, still troubles him. Robbie, thrown out of his last school over the game, plays again at his friends' request. He and Kate grow close, and he tells her about the nightmares that still come to him. Jay-Jay, feeling left out, proposes a campaign inside a disused, condemned cavern, and the others agree to take part.
