Plot summary
With Napoleon exiled to Elba, Major Richard Sharpe is posted to the Scarsdale Yeomanry in his native Yorkshire, which keeps him from settling the score with his unfaithful wife Jane and her lover, Lord Rossendale. Captain George Wickham meets Sharpe and Regimental Sergeant Major Patrick Harper and escorts them to town, where gunmen ambush them on the road. Sir Willoughby Parfitt, a mill owner, tells Sharpe of the unrest after the wars: discharged soldiers have no work and wages are being cut, while Matthew Truman rouses the discontented poor.
