Plot summary

Sam plays rock music on the streets of Illyria with her friend Mike, speaking out against the monarchy her mother leads. A night at an underground concert overwhelms her senses, and Regent Catherine sends her to summer school to make up a missed history test. The class, taught by Professor James Morrow, is not what it seems: Sam and four other second-born royals, January, Matteo, Tuma and Roxana, are there to train for the Secret Society of Second-Born Royals, a group of powered individuals who guard the world and the monarchies. Sam's overloaded senses are her own ability waking, and each recruit has one: Roxana turns invisible, Tuma sways minds, January borrows the powers of others, and Matteo controls insects. As they hone their powers, they begin to talk about their own lives and grow closer.
