Plot summary

Tess is sixteen and has never met her uncle Lionel Macomb, an abrasive conservative radio host whose Manhattan call-in show is built on insults. Her mother, Laurie, is Lionel's estranged sister and an addict, and after Laurie goes back to rehab, Tess turns up at Lionel's apartment with nowhere else to go. He tries to send her away, so Tess threatens to tell the world what she saw of his private life, and he gives her the spare bedroom. Lionel's publicist and girlfriend, Val, keeps looking for the good in him. Ratings are slipping as listeners move to a former protégé of Lionel's, Gareth Whitley, whose show takes a kinder, religious approach, and Tess becomes an intern on her uncle's program.
