Biography

Patty Andrews was an American singer and the lead vocalist of the Andrews Sisters, the close harmony trio that became one of the most popular acts of the swing era. Born in Mound, Minnesota, she was seven when the group was formed and twelve when the sisters won a talent contest at the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis. They began by imitating the Boswell Sisters, toured in vaudeville, and broke through in 1937 with the Decca hit Bei Mir Bist Du Schön. During World War II they recorded many hit records, several with Bing Crosby, and sang in service comedies including Buck Privates and Private Buckaroo. Patty broke away to work as a soloist in the 1950s, and the trio formally split in 1953 before reuniting for Capitol and Dot Records. In 1973 she and Maxene starred on Broadway in Over Here!, and she later performed a solo act.
