The Pirates of Somalia (2017) on Netflix

Plot summary

Fresh out of the University of Toronto and living in his parents' house, Jay Bahadur earns money running surveys for supermarket product placement while he tries to break into journalism. A chance meeting with his idol, the writer Seymour Tolbin, points him toward Somalia instead of graduate school. There he reaches Mohamad Farole, the president's son, who offers him a place to stay, and gains a minder called Abdi. Abdi explains that the men Jay has come to study call themselves the saviors of the sea, coast guards rather than pirates. From his room above a street leading to the market, Jay notices Maryan, who sells khat, a drug that serves as payment for interviews with the pirates.
