Plot summary
Piet Blomfeld, a former security police officer and a member of the Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging, is serving time in Pollsmoor Maximum Security Prison in Cape Town. Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who leads South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission after Apartheid ends, comes to judge whether Blomfeld's candidacy for amnesty should go forward. Blomfeld is a potential witness to murders carried out under Apartheid, and Mrs. Morobe, whose teenage daughter went missing, asks the Archbishop to discover what became of her child. In their meetings Blomfeld shows neither regret nor any wish to talk about the past, and he berates his visitor with insults instead.
