Plot summary
Nelson Mandela grows up in a rural South African village and becomes a lawyer. In the 1940s he joins the African National Congress because the law under apartheid proves useless for his people. After the Sharpeville Massacre, he abandons peaceful protest for armed resistance. A court gives him and his comrades life sentences for treason, and his wife Winnie is mistreated by the authorities. Through decades in prison, Mandela's spirit remains unbowed and his struggle becomes an international cause that continues beyond his captivity.
