Plot summary
Richard Feynman teaches physics at Caltech, and in a guest lecture he weighs what science can and cannot do. Driving home, he hears a radio bulletin: the shuttle Challenger has come apart in flight, and the astronauts aboard are likely dead. Days later a former student of his calls to ask whether he will sit on the Presidential Commission looking into the cause. Feynman dislikes the political games of Washington and hesitates, but his wife Gwen tells him he cannot pass up such a puzzle. In Washington he finds that the chairman, William Rogers, means to shield NASA. With the commission not yet at work, Feynman tours NASA facilities by himself, where employees fear speaking about known problems in the shuttle program.
