Plot summary
After his father's death in 1881, Louis Wain becomes the family's only earner, supporting his mother and five sisters with part-time illustrations for The Illustrated London News, where Sir William Ingram is his editor. He turns down a full-time post to try composing and playwriting, without success. Emily Richardson arrives as governess to his sisters, and the two are drawn to each other, which eldest sister Caroline dislikes. When a scandal forces Emily out of the house, Louis declares his love and they court, marrying in 1884 despite the talk about their age gap and different classes.
